Film & TV Language: Lighting
1) Still image analysis
The key light in this photograph is positioned on the left of the subject which helps produce a silhouette of light on her hand and part of her face which in turn gives off the impression of a headlight from maybe a car? or a torch. The photo appears to be taken at night due to the lack of back lighting making behind the woman look almost unrealistically dark. This photo depicts an example of low key lighting as the only apparent light source is from the key light itself added onto the fact that the shadows overtake majority of the subjects face although not as harsh due to it being soft lighting. the chiaroscuro adds meaning to the photo and allows the focal point to be on the cigarette smoke which is picked up by the light.
The key light is positioned as overhead lighting and is clearly soft due to the lack of coverage meaning its quite far from the subject. This photo depicts an example of low key lighting due to the little to no light in the photo with almost the subject's entire body having disappeared. This being done highlight maybe the danger the woman is in or the dark undertones of the character.
Due to this photo being monochromatic it is hard to directly point where the light is coming from however top lighting is definitely being used in front of the subject allowing there to still be facial shadows, i believe the back light is also in use in order to balance out the effects of the top light. The lighting is high key as its taken in an outdoors setting the top light very well could be the sun.
This photo is taken from an example of film noir which are known for their use of low key lighting and dramatic shadows in order to add a more sinister tone to the cinematography. In this certain example the key light is clearly placed behind the subject as top lighting. The lack of under lighting leads to a massive shadow falling over the front of the man, with only half his face remaining visible. this could be inferred to highlight the mans 2 faced nature.
The key light in this photo is positioned to the left of the subject, helping to produce the vivid shadow behind her. This is an example of low key lighting as her shadow is almost separate from her. This creates the effect of someone almost following her as shes turned around either laughng or screaming.
The key light in this photograph is positioned on the right of the subjects through the blinds, creating sense of privacy for the two kissing in it. The back lighting is minimal and part of the set dressing with the maximum amount of light protruding through the blinds onto the subject. This allows their features to still be seen. this is an exmple of high key lighting as the light from the blinds appears to be sunlight.
The back lighting is the key light source in this photograph as they walk towards the person filming. This is a clear example of low key lighting as the subjects silhouettes and shadows are all that are visual in this scene. This creates an almost animated effect and may symbolise the destructive nature of the subjects being consumed by darkness.
This scene is a key example of low and harsh lighting due to the clear shadow behind the subject. The key light is coming from the left of her which allows a half moon effect on the subjects face and is quite close to her due to the defined outline of the shadow. This effect highlight the subjects expression and may lead the viewer to percieve that not everything is as it seems.
The key light in this scene is evidently angled above the subject allowing some shadow to pass under her chin as she tilts her head up,back lighting has also been used in order to elminate the would be shadow behind her and helping to produce a more realistic looking photograph, due to this the photo is an example of high key lighting. This may have been done in order to juxtapose the womans clear prayer with her sinister intentions.
The setting in which the scene takes places adds meaning to the use of lighting, having the key light be placed behind the subject in a dark basement allows the viewer to quickly understand the more tense/fearsome atmosphere. Basements, known for their connotations of horror and fear the liht placement is perfect.
The key lighting is angled to the left of the subjects which i belive was to emphasise the womans emotions whilst simultaneously highlighting the mans stoicism this is in order to emphasise maybe his growing distase for the woman or his hidden intentions as there is shadows present on his face and not her.

3) Film noir YouTube clip analysis
Finally, find a YouTube clip that fits the film noir genre and embed it under your research (the clip can be classic noir from the 1950s or something more recent - neo-noir). How does the clip's lighting fit the film noir genre?
Clip:Baby driver (2017)
The lighting in this film relates to the film noir genre as there in an emphasis on back lighting in the shot from lights outside of the car the scene takes place in adding an almost dimmed lighting inside from the tinted windows.Other than the lighting this scene is a prime example of neo noir in terms of genre, the woman in this scene is a wonderful advocate for the characteristic of fem fatals within a show. Shes very sexual in nature and uses that to manipulate her man into doing what she wants for example enticing bats then asking her man to kill him demonstrates the characters to the point diologue and the nuance towards murder over simply a look tying into the dubious morality of these characters yet another portrayal of neo noir easily paints a picture of what each characters personality and morality ends.
